Kakamega youth leader Ian Washika has officially announced his candidacy for the county's senatorial seat, currently occupied by Boni Khalwale. Kakamega youth leader Ian Washika says he is ready to transform Kakamega if elected senator in the 2027 polls. In an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke, Washika acknowledged Khalwale's contributions but highlighted areas where he believes further improvement is needed.

Washika, a former staunch supporter of UDA, expressed his intention to address gaps in the county’s development and advocate for the needs of women, youth, and the broader community“While Dr Khalwale has made notable strides, there are critical areas that require more focus, such as enhancing healthcare services, providing stronger support for youth and women, and ensuring greater transparency in the management of county resources.

My focus will be on addressing these gaps and ensuring that the needs of all Kakamega residents are met effectively,” Washika stated. What areas does Washika promise to work on? If elected in the 2027 polls, Washika plans to prioritise several key initiatives such as youth empowerment, where he would create opportunities for education, employment, and entrepreneurship for our young people. The young politician will also be advocating for gender equality and supporting initiatives that empower women economically and socially.

Moreover, the youth leader has vowed to improve healthcare services and ensure that the county hospitals are well-equipped and staffed to promote local businesses and attract investments to boost their county’s economy. What Inspires Washika to vie for senatorial seat? Washika emphasised that the daily struggles and resilience of Kakamega’s residents have motivated him to seek this role, aiming to bring about positive change and development for the county and Kenya as a whole.

He also pledged to uphold transparency and accountability in managing county resources to benefit all residents effectively. "My inspiration comes from the resilience and determination of the people of Kakamega, especially the youth and women who strive every day to improve their lives despite numerous challenges. Their strength and perseverance motivate me to fight for a better future for all of us," he explained.
