During the cleaning, they uncovered a heavy cloth that revealed a human skull and bones upon inspection. Alarmed, Nandutu called for help, drawing neighbours and eventually alerting the police. "We now believe these are the remains of Esther, whom Kirya claimed had married another man," Nandutu explained. According to Nandutu, a year after she had left, Kirya informed her that his wife had married another man and abandoned their two-year-old child. "I didn't ask much because these people used to fight a lot, and I thought maybe Esther got tired and chose to get married somewhere else," she said. Mulelenge's teenage son, James, revealed that he had long doubted their father's story.
The youngster added that whenever they asked him for more information, he always avoided answering. "It was clear that Kirya knew exactly what had happened to my mother," James stated. Following the discovery, neighbours quickly apprehended Kirya and handed him over to the police. Hellen Butoto, the Ssezibwa regional police spokesperson, confirmed that Kirya would be charged with murder, pending DNA analysis. That is if the results verify that the remains are indeed those of the missing Mulelenge. "If the DNA results confirm the body is not Esther Mulelenge’s, Kirya will still have to explain where the body came from, as he has been responsible for the premises since 2021," Butoto added.
