Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has narrowly escaped another assassination attempt just nine weeks after being shot in the ear during a campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania. The FBI has classified the Sunday, September 15 incident in West Palm Beach, Florida, as an attempted assassination.  Following the attack, CNN reported that Trump reassured his supporters of his safety and reaffirmed his commitment to his presidential campaign.

“There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumours start spiralling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I am safe and well. Nothing will slow me down. I will never surrender!” he wrote. What happened at West Palm Beach? US Secret Service agents, stationed a short distance from where Trump was playing, spotted the muzzle of an AK-style rifle sticking out from the bushes along the golf course, about 400 yards away.

During the confrontation, an agent fired at the assailant, who then abandoned his rifle and fled in an SUV. Law enforcement apprehended the suspect in a neighbouring county. According to the Boston Herald, Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said the suspect displayed a calm and emotionless demeanour when they arrested him.  “He never asked, ‘What is this about?’ Law enforcement with long rifles, blue lights, a lot going on. He never questioned it,” Snyder said.
