Heavy anxiety has engulfed the Hillside Endarasha Academy in Kieni, Nyeri County after parents and community members gathered to assess the state of affairs at the school.

Parents who arrived in numbers could be seen outside the school waiting to confirm the status of their children.

Police officers cordoned off some areas of the school in a move aimed at investigating the cause of the fire in the institution.

Interiors Cabinet Secretary Kindiki Kithure arrived at the school and was holding a meeting with security agents, education officials and the school's management by press time.

Children who have since been reconnected with their children are currently undergoing counselling by the Kenya Red Cross Society.

The dorm that caught fire had 156 children with 17 having been confirmed dead and 14 injured.

The injured are admitted to hospitals.

A multi-agency team is currently in the process of establishing the whereabouts of the rest of the children who were being accommodated in the dorm.

The Kenya Red cross Society is also in the process of offering counselling services to both parents and learners.
