There was panic in the Ngara area along Desai Road, Nairobi,, on Sunday morning following a fire incident that affected a gas supply station.
The fire caused explosions as gas cylinders packed at the station went up in flames and exploded.
According to sources who spoke to The Star, the fire started in one of the shops in the area before spreading to several other stalls.
The huge fire razed several stalls and shops within the area before firefighters from the Nairobi County government contained it.
Traders were left counting losses from the inferno as street children salvaged items from the area. It was not immediately clear how much was lost in the inferno.
Nairobi Regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei, who visited the scene, said property of unknown value was destroyed.
He said there were no reported injuries so far and that experts were investigating the source of the fire.
“We suspect the fire started from either food kiosks near the station or some garages operating there. Experts are investigating the incident,” he said.
