Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has addressed his ongoing calls for Mt. Kenya unity, which have sparked accusations of promoting tribalism. His advocacy for the region’s cohesion has prompted some Kenya Kwanza MPs to call for his impeachment, with reports suggesting that a motion has already been finalised. Why has Gachagua been calling for Mt. Kenya’s unity? In an interview with journalists from Mt. Kenya East, Gachagua noted that he has observed the region’s development trends since the era of the late former president Daniel Moi. “We have experienced the consequences of division. I have been in government since Moi’s era and so I have experience.
Those MPs criticising my push for unity were very young. Whenever we are divided, we suffer significant losses, but when united, we gain,” said Gachagua. He emphasised that when Mt. Kenya unites, it benefits politically and economically, while disunity leads to poor performance. “I’m not advocating for unity just for the sake of it; I believe it’s the only way we can thrive politically, socially, and economically. If we fail to unite, we risk losing our relevance in Kenya’s political landscape and our place at the table for resource allocation and leadership. My commitment is to contribute as a patriot for my community,” he explained.
