Faith Kipyegon Defeats Gudaf Tsegay to Win Women’s 1500m at Athlos NYC

Triple Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon produced another incredible performance to win the women’s 1500m at Athlos NYC. The Kenyan, fresh off winning her fifth Diamond League title, clocked 4:04.79 to win ahead of Ethiopian duo Diribe Welteji and her compatriot Susan Ejore Kipyegon outsprinted her perennial rival Welteji to win comfortably. Gudaf Tsegay was fourth. Faith Kipyegon will go down as one of Kenya’s greatest athletes. The 30-year-old led the race from start to finish and fended off anyone who tried to get ahead of her. In the final lap, Welteji tried to overtake Kipyegon but was unsuccessful. 

The Ethiopian finished second in 4:05.58. Ejore was third in 4:06.25, while world champion in the 10,000m, Tsegay was fourth in 4:06.81, per Prime Time Timing. The victory concludes a historic season for Kipyegon, who won everything this year and cemented her legacy as one of the greatest female track and field athletes ever. She broke her world record, won her third gold medal in the 1500m at the Olympic Games and won her fifth Diamond League title in the distance. She also won a silver medal in the 5000m Kipyegon will be aiming to win her fourth world title at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
