Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua reveres retired president Uhuru Kenyatta as Mt Kenya region’s go-to leader. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua (far right) shaking hands with former president Uhuru Kenyatta (far left). He regretted having gone overly ballistic on Uhuru during the 2022 pre-election campaigns. According to Gachagua, the motivation for loathing Uhuru was his counsel to the Mt Kenya electorate to consider voting for Raila Odinga as president. “The mountain people and I feel very bad that we punished, demeaned, told off and embarrassed Uhuru for telling us that Raila is a good man and that we were very brutal with him. It has come to our knowledge that it was very unfair,” said Gachagua.
The deputy president admitted that he and his faction were out of order to blindly take on Uhuru, whom they bitterly abused and immobilised in Mt Kenya. He said he realised they were unfair to Uhuru after President William Ruto recently brought Raila into his fold. Gachagua added that he had since contacted Uhuru and asked for forgiveness, and their relationship has been in good form. And by virtue of both Uhuru and Ruto seeing a comrade in Raila, the Mt Kenya region also chose to shelve their animosity against the ODM leader. “We have no problem with Raila Odinga. In fact, it is said that a Mt Kenya king does not pronounce himself twice on a matter. Our son Uhuru Kenyatta has pronounced himself on this matter; therefore, that pronouncement carries the day. As we stand today, I, with the mountain people, am happy with Raila Odinga.
