On Sunday morning, September 1, rescuers found the helicopter's wreckage in a hilly area at an altitude of 900 meters (2,953 feet), according to Kamchatka governor Vladimir Solodov, as CTV News reported. “The wreckage was spotted from the air near the last known contact point. So far, we have recovered 17 bodies. The rescuers have set up a temporary camp, and the search will resume at daybreak,” reported Ivan Lemikhov, an official from the Emergency Situations Ministry.
The helicopter was operated by Vityaz-Aero, a Kamchatka-based company specialising in tourist flights, according to Moscow Times. Earlier, the rescue team reported that foggy weather had prevented them from locating and retrieving the victims. Authorities also noted that the crew had not issued any warnings about potential difficulties before taking off or prior to the crash.
