Senator David Ole Sankok - I used to make Sh50k a day before politics

Senator David Ole Sankok

Media personality Oga Obinna is currently on a nationwide tour for his show, and on Friday, August 23, he was in Narok, where he interviewed Senator David Ole Sankok.

The politician amazed the audience by explaining how being a medic was more lucrative than being a politician.

"You don't go into politics to make money. You go into politics to protect what you already have," Sankok said.

When Obinna asked how he made his money, Sankok responded, "My money has come a long way. While I was at the university, I opened my first clinic under a tree in Suswa. It's now closed, but that's where it all began."

He explained that he couldn't afford to rent a shop at the time, so he set up an open-air clinic and relied on a friend working in a nearby hospital to refer patients to him.

Sankok had been expelled from the University of Nairobi for three years and used that time to work as a medic.

"When I was out of the university, I took out a loan of KSh 20,000 to buy medicine and opened that clinic under the tree. I was also a student trainee at Kenyatta Hospital, where I translated for Maasai patients who couldn't speak Kiswahili or English."

Sankok went on to open four more clinics after closing the first one.

"As a doctor, just from consultations alone, you can make a lot of money. When my clinics started doing well, I was making KSh 50,000 a day," he revealed, adding that this translated to KSh 1.5 million a month. He compared this to his earnings as a politician, saying, "But in politics, I only make KSh 600,000 as a salary."

Obinna was astonished, asking, "KSh 50,000 a day?"

"Yes, it's possible," the Senator replied. "This was between 2005 and 2014. I closed my last clinic in 2014."
