Safaricom Takes on Elon Musk's Starlink, Increases Wi-Fi Speeds Upto 500Mbps Amid Hot Competition

Space X founder Elon Musk who also owns Starlink, and Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa.

Safaricom has increased its internet speeds in a move set to enhance its market competitiveness.  Safaricom has increased Wi-Fi speeds to rival Starlink. Safaricom is dominant in Kenya's telecommunications sector and a major provider of broadband internet. Starlink's entry into the Kenyan market has significantly disrupted it with high-speed packages and what many consider cheap costs for the associated speeds.  Safaricom increases speeds Following social media reports that Safaricom had reduced the prices of its internet packages, TUKO.co.ke sought clarification from the company. Safaricom clarified that although it has not reduced the prices, the internet speeds associated with each package have been increased. "We have not reduced prices, but the speeds have been increased", Safaricom responded to a query by TUKO.co.ke. New speeds for Safaricom Wi-Fi Safaricom listed the speed changes as shown below: Bronze package, from 10Mbps to 15Mbps Silver, from 20Mbps to 30Mbps Gold, from 40Mbps to 80Mbps Diamond, from 100Mbps to 500Mbps Comparing Safaricom and Starlink In an earlier article TUKO.co.ke compared the prices of and speeds of major internet providers in Kenya. Notably, Safaricom's diamond package was limited to 100Mbps and Starlink's unlimited broadband internet plans reached speeds of up to 100 Mbps; however, the prices differed significantly. Following Safaricom's recent speed increase, the Diamond Package now provides unlimited broadband internet speed of up to 500Mbps for KSh 12,499.
