Makueni-Tsavo Trust partner to mitigate wildlife conflict

A partnership signed by Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. and Tsavo Trust Chief Executive Officer Richard Moller

Makueni County has signed a working partnership with Tsavo Trust, a wildlife conservator, to mitigate human-wildlife conflict in the Mtito Adei area.

The partnership signed by Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. and Tsavo Trust Chief Executive Officer Richard Moller on Friday at the Governor’s Office in Wote Town entailed the joint implementation of projects to keep animals away from human settlements.

Some of the targeted projects include the installation of electric fence in sections bordering wildlife corridors, the provision of water for both wildlife and residents, the establishment of health facilities, community education, and participation in environmental conservation.

Governor Mutula said that the initiative is geared towards getting a permanent solution to address the perennial cases of wild animals, especially elephants, straying into people’s homes and farmlands, causing crop destruction and, at times, deaths and injuries.

He expressed optimism that the human-wildlife conflict, if well managed, can transform into a key economic pillar through tourism development in the area.
