A Kenyan man faces a hefty fine of nearly KSh 130,000 after being caught on camera using his phone while driving abroad. Kiprotich told TUKO.co.ke that the camera captured him while he was exiting the Ipswich Motorway onto Mt Coot-tha. Australian authorities utilize advanced technology to capture number plate details of offending vehicles, which are then used to send infringement notices. These notices typically demand payment within two weeks, with severe penalties for non-compliance. "If you fail to pay, your employer may be required to deduct a certain amount from your wage each month, or your bank may be ordered to transfer money from your account to the government," Kiprotich said. Due to the strict enforcement measures in place, other actions, such as license suspension and wheel clamping, may also be taken. Kiprotich’s fine is due by August 26. Reflecting on the incident, he urged the Kenyan government to implement similar measures to curb reckless driving and reduce road accidents. "This experience has shown me the importance of strict enforcement to ensure road safety. I believe Kenya could benefit from similar measures to protect lives," he added.  In Australia, traffic enforcement through the use of cameras is a common practice, particularly in monitoring compliance with road safety rules. The fines imposed are intended to deter drivers from engaging in dangerous behaviours. Such infringements include using mobile phones while driving, which is a major cause of road accidents.
