Intern Teachers' Contracts Extended by 4 Months, TSC Issues New Guidelines

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has sought to extend the period for internship of teachers hired in September 2023. TSC chief executive officer Nancy Macharia. The teachers employer extenders interns' stay by four months.  The teachers' employer addressed a letter outlining the significance of the internship in nurturing their skills. What TSC told intern teachers It said the term of engagement would remain as it was, as the extension phase begins on September 1 and ends on December 31; but the interns ought to re-enter their details into the employer's directory.  “It is acknowledged that your contract will lapse on 31 August 2024. Accordingly, the Commission would like to extend the contract for four- (4) months on the same terms and conditions from 1st September 2024 to 31 December 2024,” partly read the letter. The commission had earlier this year extended the contracts of the first bunch of interns hired in January 2023. It said the one-year internship programme is majorly aimed at equipping and sustaining the competencies of persons entering the teaching service. The programme targets unemployed registered teachers. Government's plan for JSS teachers Elsewhere, the chairperson of the Budget and Appropriations Committee in the National Assembly, Ndindi Nyoro, recently revealed the government has set aside KSh 18.7 billion to employ Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers on a permanent and pensionable basis.  He said the issue of the JSS teachers was defended by the head of state as items were being struck out of the budget following the death of the Finance Bill 2024. Nyoro declared that the teachers would be hired on permanent terms as soon as TSC completes the process of incorporating them into the government directory. Nyoro further revealed that the government was seeking to appraise the teachers who were earning KSh 17,000 for monthly pay.
