Ferdinand Omanyala failed to make it through to the final of the men’s 100m at the Paris Olympics after finishing eighth in the third semi-final. Omanyala clocked 10.08 seconds in a heat won by Kishane Thompson from Jamaica, with Fred Kerley from the USA coming in second. Ferdinand Omanyala (right) competes at the semi-finals of the 2024 Paris Olympics on August 4, 2024. Omanyala had been placed in arguably the toughest of all the semi-finals, where he had to finish inside the top two in a group that had Thompson, Kerley, Zharnel Hughes, Andre De Grasse and others. For context, Thompson was the fastest man in the world heading into Paris 2024, while Fred Kerley is the 2022 world champion.
Zharnel Hughes won bronze in Budapest last year, while De Grasse is a seasoned sprinter and the reigning 200m Olympic champion. Others who qualified for the final include world champion Noah Lyles and Oblique Seville from semi-final 1, Akani Simbine and Letsile Tebogo from semi-final 2. Reigning Olympic champion Marcel Jacobs and Kenny Bednarek, are also through as non-automatic qualifiers. It is now the second Olympics in a row that Omanyala has failed to make it to the finals. The Commonwealth champion had a decent season heading into Paris, where he set the second-fastest time in the world this year at the national trials. Kenyan athlete barred from competing at Paris 2024 Tuko.co.ke had earlier reported that a Kenyan athlete had been barred from competing at Paris 2024. Kevin Kipkorir had travelled to France despite confusion about his out-of-competition tests as required by the Athletics Integrity Unit. The AIU rejected Kenya’s appeal to compete in the mixed 4 by 400m relay team. Kenya failed to make it to the finals after finishing seventh in their heat on Friday.
