Two Kenyans, Beatrice Chepkoech and Faith Cherotich, have reached the final of the women’s 3000m steeplechase, but Jackline Chepkoech has been eliminated after finishing last in her heat. Beatrice Chepkoech and Cherotich finished in the top five in their respective heats and will contend for the gold medal in the coming days. World champion Winfred Yavi is also through to the final, as is Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai. Beatrice Chepkoech and Faith Cherotich will represent Kenya in the final of the women’s 3000m steeplechase at the Olympic Games. 20-year-old Cherotich finished second in the first heat behind the Olympic champion in 9:10.57. Beatrice Chepkoech, the world record holder, comfortably won her heat in 9:13.56 and will be looking to beat Yavi, who defeated her at the World Athletics Championships. Meanwhile, the other Kenyan representative, Jackline Chepkoech, finished last in the second heat in 9:35.56, meaning Kenya will be represented by two athletes in the final. Kenya has not won a gold medal in the distance, but have taken two silver and two bronze medals.
