Panic in Mlolongo as homes face demolition over NSSF land dispute

Tension is building in Mlolongo phase four where over 2,000 residents are embroiled in a land dispute involving a private developer and a state agency.

The simmering land ownership conflict pits the squatters against the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) claiming the same piece of land.

The devastated squatters claim ownership of the 100-acre piece of land through adverse possession dating back to 2008.

On 9th July several homes were demolished by people claiming to be agents of NSSF without a court order despite an ongoing court case at Mavoko Law Court slated for a mention on 25th July.

Following recent demolitions the squatters Thursday camped at Mavoko SNP police station seeking an audience of security apparatus to help resolve the dispute.

The NSSF officers who had earlier visited the disputed land for an undisclosed mission were forced to scamper for safety at the police station. They declined to speak to the media though they maintained the land belonged to the state agency.

The residents allege some unscrupulous individuals had been using state offices as a decoy to grab idle lands in Athi River.

Mlolongo West Police Commander Anderson Mbai said only a court can determine the land ownership. He further urged those affected to seek a court order restraining any further demolition as per the law.
