Legislator Simon Peter Aleper dies after an accident

Former Moroto Municipality legislator Simon Peter Aleper tragically lost his life in a hit-and-run incident along the Mbale-Jinja Highway near Bukoona. Former Moroto MP Simon Peter Mbale (pictured) was killed in a tragic crash after a collision with an unidentified car. Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa confirmed that Aleper, who served as the vice chairperson for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in the Karamoja region and was a member of the Central Executive Committee (CEC), was en route from Moroto to attend an NRM Central Executive Committee meeting. The meeting was set to discuss the leadership of parliament's sectoral committees."NRM central executive committee this morning received with shock the disheartening news of the untimely demise of our vice chairman, Aleper. We convey our deepest condolences to the family, the president who is also the NRM national chairman, the people of Karamoja and the NRM fraternity.  Burial arrangements will be communicated later. May the soul of the departed leader rest in eternal peace," read a condolence note from the party. According to Busoga East police reports, the incident occurred on Tuesday, July 23 at 1am. Aleper's vehicle, a V8, collided with an unidentified car whose driver fled the scene. The collision happened as Aleper was travelling from Mbale towards his destination, and the other vehicle was heading from Iganga. Authorities took Aleper's body to Mulago National Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination. The wreckage of his car was transferred to Iganga police as part of the investigation into the tragic accident.
