Politician Alinur Mohammed in court

Nairobi politician Alinur Mohammed recently made headlines after being abducted by unknown men while leaving his office on Wednesday, July 18. Alinur Mohamed was released on bail after harrowing abduction and legal battle. Alinur recounted the harrowing ordeal, describing how masked men claiming to be detectives refused to show their IDs and threw him into the back of his own car. "On July 17, 2024, just before noon, as I was leaving an office in Gigiri after a business meeting, five masked strangers surrounded me. They claimed to be DCI officers but refused to show their work IDs," Alinur tweeted. What was Alinur Mohamed's experience after abduction? He claimed the abductors attacked him, confiscated his phones, and stole over KSh 400,000, including his passport and business documents. Education is Your Right! Don’t Let Social Norms Hold You Back. They demanded he unlock his phone and delete his social media accounts, slapping him when he refused. "They drove me around Nairobi for over four hours until my car ran out of fuel. They used some of the money they found in my car to pay for more fuel and kept the rest," he added. One of the men reportedly communicated with a powerful state operative during the ordeal, claiming Alinur's arrest was due to a complaint by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed. Alinur was detained at the DCI Headquarters, where he was held for hours without food and his lawyers were denied access.  Despite fasting, he was not given any food and his phones were illegally confiscated. He was later charged on Thursday, July 18, with the publication of false information. "My lawyers tried to arrange for cash bail, but the request was denied. Eventually, they transferred me to Kamukunji Police Station, where the officers were friendly but under orders not to release me on bail," Alinur shared with TUKO.co.ke. The next morning, Alinur was moved from Kamukunji Police Station to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP Headquarters), and then to Milimani Law Court. He was charged with falsely representing the State House Spokesperson on social media. According to the charge sheet, on July 15, Alinur and others, not before the court published false data on social media, falsely identified Hussein Mohammed as the author of a critical post. Alinur denied the charges and was freed on cash bail after his lawyer's intervention.
