President William Ruto revealed that he had the option to shut down the internet and media during the peak of the youth-led anti-Finance Bill protests. President William Ruto said that he had the power to switch off the media and internet during protests. What exactly did Ruto say? Speaking during a Town Hall event with Mombasa residents, the head of state asserted that he strongly believes in the constitution, which gives everyone the freedom to express themselves. He cited countries like Bangladesh, which have shut down the internet and media to prevent coverage of protests.

Ruto, however, stated that the situation in the country was entirely different, as the media was permitted to cover the protests without disruption and the internet remained accessible during that time. “Kenya is running full steam, and the internet is available everyday. People are talking from all over the place. Newspapers are writing whatever they want. The TV has four screens, they are showing what’s happening in Kondele and everywhere. What further freedom should you ask from me?” The president said he had the capability to shut them down but chose not to because he believes in the rule of law.
