A group of Nairobi ODM leaders have thrown their weight behind Makadara MP George Aladwa in the race to succeed Energy Cabinet Secretary nominee as National Assembly Minority Leader.

Speaking in Nairobi on Sunday, the ODM officials said it is time the Party reward loyalty.

Led by County chairlady Lilian Omogi, they called on the Opposition Chief Raila Odinga to consider Aladwa who also doubles as the Nairobi party chairman.

“Nobody can doubt the loyalty of Aladwa when it comes to party matters, he has stood with the party in the county and even was arrested at one time,” Omogi said.

“He is also qualified and the most experienced leader in Nairobi county having served from Councillor, Deputy Mayor, Mayor and now MP.”

On his part, Aladwa said he fits the bill and ready for task of leading the minority troops in the National Assembly.

“I have been the chair of the party and the county as well as the chair of the chairs drawn from all the 47 counties. I am even qualified to be the Party Leader,” Aladwa said.

The race to succeed Wandayi has attracted at least six contestants from the ODM party.

Some of the bigwigs who have expressed interests include MPs Otiende Amolo (Rarieda), Millie Odhiambo (Suba North), Antoney Kibagandi (Kitutu Chache South), jared Okelo (Nyando) and James Nyikal (Seme).

Homa Bay Town Opondo Kaluma is also said to be eyeing the seat.

The position is the third in the pecking order in the National Assembly after the speaker and the majority leader.

The decision on who succeeds Wandayi rests squarely on party leader whose ODM party will field the successor following a 2022 negotiation that gave the seat to Orange party.
