Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has thanked the youth for pushing for change in the country. Owino went on to invite Gen Zs to Parliament again so that he can have a proper meal with them.
Addressing mourners in Siaya county during the burial of comedian Fred Omondi on Saturday, Babu said the youth, particularly the Gen Zs, have shown the country that people must fight for their rights.
“We were promised many things. We were promised heaven in vain, therefore there must be changes,” he stated.
“I invited you to Parliament for tea. You came but you also ate ugali and rice. Did you see where I put salt and pepper? When you’re hungry, your stomach will alert you but when you’re stupid, your brain will not alert you,” he said.
Several people were shot outside Parliament on Tuesday as police clashed with protesters who stormed the complex after lawmakers passed highly controversial tax increases.
Police fired live ammunition after tear gas and rubber bullets failed to disperse the thousands who had gathered to protest the tax hikes.
Fires broke out in the parliament buildings after protesters made it past police barricades. At least two vehicles in the area were set on fire and burned.
Protesters had demonstrated peacefully near parliament in Nairobi most of the day to demand that lawmakers vote against Finance Bill, 2024 but it was approved
On Saturday, Babu said Kenyans were promised free education during the campaign but the cost has only worsened.
“Our children finished primary school but over 50,000 have not yet joined high school,” he claimed.
He further said people need money to access basic treatment in hospitals.
