Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has released a comprehensive report regarding the number of fatalities during the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests. In a statement on Wednesday, June 26, KNCHR faulted the National Police Service for using excessive force on protesters. KNCHR indicated that its investigations showed that 21 Kenyans were killed by the use of live bullets in various parts of the country. "The commission has so far recorded 21 fatalities shot in the course of the demonstrations. Reports indicate that most of the deceased were shot with live bullets during the protests," KNCHR said. The human rights commissions added that 336 protesters and police officers sustained various injuries during the demonstrations. "The commission has documented 336 protesters and police officers injured since the commencement of the protests on June 18. The injuries range from fractures, bullet wounds, soft tissue injuries and inhalation of tear gas. The ones injured severely were referred to hospitals for specialised treatment," they added.The commission further disclosed that 22 people have been abducted by the security agencies for linked to the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests. "The commission is aware that so far, 22 people have been abducted and 53 arbitrarily arrested, including doctors and lawyers," KNCHR added. Anti-Finance Bill 2024 protesters stormed the Kenyan Parliament, setting a section of the building on fire after overpowering police officers.
