EACC probes embezzlement of Ksh1.2B in Garissa County

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has launched an inquiry into the loss of Ksh1.2 billion from Garissa County.

The anti-corruption body is probing eight senior officials on allegations of siphoning the public funds.

The commission conducted raids on the offices and houses of the officials in question, carting away documents deemed crucial in the ongoing investigations.

“The officials are alleged to be directly or indirectly trading with the County government through companies owned by themselves, close family members and associates,” said EACC Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi.

Three officials have so far recorded statements with the commission.

The inquiry was undertaken following a court order allowing the commission to investigate the eight officials of the Garissa County government, their proxies and companies associated with engaging in business with the county government.

EACC has further raised concerns with the Senate for mutilating the Conflict of Interest Bill saying the political class deleted key clauses in the Constitution used in the fight against graft, thereby stripping the commission off the power to implement the Act.
