Isaac Macharia, Group Chairman of Equity Group Holdings Plc, expressed his gratitude for Wamae’s unwavering dedication and impactful contributions. “On behalf of the Board of Directors, Management, Staff, and all Stakeholders of Equity Group Holdings Plc, I take this opportunity to thank Mary for her steadfast dedication, advice, and commitment to Equity Group and wish her all the best in the next phase of her life and career,” said Macharia in a statement by the bank. Mary Wamae’s career at Equity Mary Wamae’s career with Equity Group spans two decades, during which she made significant contributions to the company’s growth and success. She joined the group in 2004 as Head of Legal and quickly rose through the ranks, taking on roles such as Company Secretary, Head of Investor Relations, and Director of Strategy. In 2017, she was appointed as the Group Executive Director and was tasked with overseeing Equity Group subsidiaries, marking her as the first person to hold this pivotal position. Her leadership and vision were recognised when she was appointed to the Board of Equity Group Holdings Plc and its subsidiaries. Mary Wamae’s awards In 2021, she was honoured with the Angaza Award: Women to Watch in Banking & Finance and was named the overall winner of the 2021 Women on Board Award by the Women on Boards Network (WOBN). These awards highlighted her dedication to demonstrating purpose, authenticity, resilience, innovation, and making a sustainable impact in economic and social initiatives. more recently, in 2023, she was recognised as the Private Sector Lawyer of the Year by Nairobi Legal Awards for her 33 years of service as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. Her academic credentials were further enhanced with a recent Certification in Women in Leadership from the University of Oxford. Wamae’s retirement marks the end of an illustrious career at Equity Bank, leaving behind a legacy of strong leadership and remarkable achievements that have significantly shaped the company’s trajectory.
