The Judiciary has observed a day of mourning after the tragic death of Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti, who was shot dead by a senior police officer at Makadara Law Courts. Deputy CJ Mwilu breaks down during Judiciary mourning day for slain Monica Kivuti at Makadara Law Courts.  Judicial staff gathered at the same facility on Tuesday, June 18, for a memorial service, offering heartfelt tributes to their departed colleague. What message did Mwilu pass to Kenyans? Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu, deeply affected by the loss, struggled to hold back her tears while recounting the tragic events.  “And so I say to those of us in leadership. We must do something to stop hurting us at our place of work. The law says employers should provide a safe working place and we are employed by the people of Kenya. We all pay taxes, protect and do not kill us,” said emotional Mwilu. She appealed to the public to support and safeguard judicial officers, emphasising their shared experiences and role as servants of the people. Monica Kivuti died days after celebrating birthday A close friend of the deceased revealed that she perished after celebrating her birthday on June 12. She also disclosed that the magistrate left behind three children including an 18-month-old baby.  The hardworking and devoted mother was shot dead by an agitated officer after she revoked his wife’s bail. The suspect had failed to honour a court summons.
