President William Ruto returned to the country on a Kenya Airways flight from Switzerland on Monday, June 17. President William Ruto used the Kenya Airways flight to return to the country weeks after stating that KQ flights were expensive. He had travelled to Switzerland for a high-level meeting focused on forging peace in Ukraine. Ruto was welcomed by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki and Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung’wah. This comes weeks after Kenyans and politicians complained that the president used KSh 200 million of taxpayers’ money to hire a private jet during his state visit to the United States. Ruto had abandoned the traditional presidential jet in favour of a chartered Boeing 737-700 business jet operated by Royal Jet of Dubai. How did Ruto explain his use of the Royal Jet? President Ruto’s trip to the United States stirred praise and criticism in equal measure. In response to public outrage, Ruto defended his decision, claiming the private jet was more cost-effective than flying with Kenya Airways.
