Naivasha catholic priest killed in hit and run road accident

A road accident

Police in Naivasha are seeking a lorry driver who hit and killed a Catholic priest along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway before fleeing from the scene.

The priest was crossing the highway near Karai area on Wednesday evening when the lorry that he was driving from Nairobi towards Naivasha ran over him.

The lorry briefly stopped on the roadside during the 10pm incident before the driver decided to speed off as members of the public moved in to assist the injured cleric.

According to James Kabono from the Naivasha Road Safety Association, the number of fatal accidents involving pedestrians was on the rise along the highway.

He identified KCC, Mithuri, Kayole, Karai and Raini centers as the most affected by the fatal accidents mainly in the morning and evenings.

In the latest incident, he said that the Priest was walking back to a residential home that hosts several Catholic priests when the incident occurred.

“The body was left in pieces after the grisly incident while the driver escaped from the scene after realizing what had happened,” he said.

Elsewhere, the rising waters of Lake Naivasha claimed the first life after a middle-aged man fell into a flooded borehole and drowned in the Kihoto estate.

The man was walking from his home in the flooded estate when he accidentally fell into the well as members of the public watched in horror.

In the last two weeks, water levels in the estate that is home to tens of flower farm workers have risen sharply flooding homes, latrines and boreholes.

A village elder Sam Mbuthia said that a third of the estate was currently covered in water, raising fears of a disease outbreak in the coming weeks.

“So many boreholes and latrines are flooded posing danger to area residents and already we have lost one person who fell into one of the flooded boreholes,” he said.

Naivasha OCPD Stephen Kirui confirmed both cases adding that the bodies had been collected and taken to the area mortuary and inquest files opened.
