David Ndii Blasted for Sharing Photos of Floods in Foreign Countries, Urging Kenyans to Calm Down

David Ndii, the Chairman of the Presidential Council of Economic Advisors, has sparked criticism after addressing the ongoing flooding crisis in Kenya. David Ndii said floods were a normal occurrence. What did David Ndii say about the floods? Ndii urged the public to remain calm, suggesting that the floods were part of a “new normal” not exclusive to Kenya. He wrote: "Calm down people. This is the new normal." Accompanying his message were photographs of flood events from various countries, indicating a global pattern of similar crises. However, Ndii’s attempt to normalize the situation backfired when netizens pointed out that the shared images were outdated, stemming from incidents in Germany (2021), Japan (2018), Britain (2007), and China (2021). Critics accused him of minimizing the floods’ impact, to which Ndii replied: "Flooding is always normal. Frequent severe flooding is the new normal." When another netizen lamented the loss of lives due to the floods, Ndii said that death was not a unique or strange phenomenon. He said: "People die all the time." Netizens angered by David Ndii's remarks The economist's remarks sparked outrage among netizens. TUKO.co.ke has compiled some of the reactions below: @MihrThakar: "Kudos for this tweet. The Propaganda Ministry should reward you with a block of cheese, a gallon of ale, a jar of olives and triple rations of rye bread."  @AdamMaina_: "And how did those countries respond? Posting tweets of news stories from 2021? No." @ahmedsalims: "How do you sleep at night, David? Knowing you are mocking the same people you pretend your interests work for? Honestly?" @Kaikainaipaa: "Floods are happening globally, and it was unexpected, but we urge governments to always be quick to respond to emergency issues in such times." @Moha001_Onyango: "Are they also depending on the Red Cross after politicians looted all the money for disaster preparedness?" @Docktus_: "Ndii is always looking for a comparison to show that we are doing better. He could choose to just shut up if he is not helping anyone." @MudgeRulf: "The details you are leaving out are that citizens of other countries will get more help and get it swiftly. Those governments will also make an objective assessment of the situation and work on preventive measures, etc. It is a shame that you are comparing the scenarios!" @ThisIsBett: "To clarify, David Ndii asserts that the Government of Kenya can not solely be held responsible for the floods, as this phenomenon is occurring globally. He points out other countries experiencing similar challenges to emphasize that Kenya is not alone in facing this issue." @Kipchirchir_law: "Sure, David! We take solace in knowing we're dying with the rest of the world. How comforting!" @Angiemovines: "At least they are being rescued on time."
