25,000 households who had encroached on riparian land within Nairobi and were affected by the recent floods have been paid the Ksh 10,000 one off government support.
The Ministry of Interior says the number is out 40-thousand whose structures were within the riparian corridors and have been pulled down for safety reasons.
“Already, 25,000 households have received the pledged Government support of Ksh 10,000 per household, while the remaining households will receive theirs by close of business Friday, May 31, 2024,” said Interior CS Kithure Kindiki.
According to Kindiki, the affected will receive priority consideration in the ongoing affordable housing programme.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kindiki says the evacuation exercise has been conducted in a humane way and those affected were allowed to remove their belongings before the structures were demolished.
According to the ministry 181,000 people have been moved from the riparian lands and the exercise will extend to all parts of the country to ensure no settlement is within 30 meters of the riparian land.
Last month, torrential rains and the resulting floods led to the deaths of more than 300 Kenyans and massive destruction of property and livelihoods in many parts of the Country.
