A section of Gamba tana road swept away

For a third day in a row transport along the busy Garsen-Witu -Lamu Highway has been affected after floods swept away a section of the road.

Three sections of the road between Gamba Police Station and Lango La Simba have been rendered impassible.

On Saturday, Kenya National Highway Authority closed the road following the heavy downpour experienced upstream resulting in Tana River breaking its banks.

Gamba Police Station, an important security installation along the busy road has also been marooned.

Security officers at the police line have been evacuated after floods submerged their houses making them inhabitable.

They have been moved to Minjila subcounty headquaters, but the police station remained operational.

Commuters to and from Lamu have been forced to use speed boats along the destroyed section of the road.

Boat operators are charging Sh300 per person and Sh20,000 for cargo in trucks.

Paul Thairu, a boat operator, said there are at least 50 boats deployed to help passengers cross the affected section of the road.

“We are glad this time round the passengers are cautious and aware of their safety. The boat operators and also organised,” said Thairu.
