10,000 trees planted in Mt. Elgon as part of Gov’ts 15B tree agenda

Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba Monday led a significant tree planting exercise in Banandega Forest, Cheptais, Mt. Elgon, Bungoma County.

This initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to combat climate change.

Accompanied by County Forestry Service Conservator Eric Abungu and Deputy County Commissioner Langa Ladilo, CS Namwamba oversaw the planting of 10,000 trees in the area.

His ministry is also conducting similar exercises in Kasarani and Kilifi.

Namwamba stated that his ministry fully supports the government’s ambitious plan to plant 15 billion trees.

He highlighted the ministry’s achievements so far, saying, “We are carrying out this exercise in three different regions: here in Bungoma County, in the Kasarani ecosystem where my colleague CS Soipan Tuiya is leading the charge, as well as in Kilifi County.”

He further noted the progress made, “So far, the ministry has contributed by planting 3.8 million trees, and we intend to raise this number to 7 million before the end of the rainy season.”

Expressing confidence in the collective government effort, Namwamba said, “The whole-of-government approach will ensure that we hit the target of 15 billion trees by 2032. This will significantly restore Kenya’s forest cover to 30 per cent.”

He urged everyone to participate in this crucial initiative, stating, “We will continue to do this. We have to raise the country’s forest cover. I urge everybody to do their part and plant a tree today and walk together in this journey of climate action.”

This tree-planting exercise underscores the government’s commitment to environmental conservation and climate change mitigation.
