Following heavy rains that have wreaked havoc in various parts of the country, Gucha Sub-county Deputy County Commissioner Estherina Kung’u has issued a stern warning to residents living around the Rioro Water Reservoir.
Kung’u urged caution and advised residents to stay away from the reservoir as its water level continues to balloon dangerously.
The Rioro Water Reservoir, initially constructed by the county government of Kisii as a fish pond, has been neglected for years. Now, with the heavy rains exacerbating the situation, it poses a significant danger to the surrounding residents. Concerns have been raised about the potential for flooding and other hazards as the reservoir’s water levels surge.
Residents living near the reservoir have voiced their apprehension and pleaded with the county government to take swift action to close off the area for everyone’s safety. Speaking to the KNA, they emphasised the urgency of the situation and stressed the need for immediate intervention to mitigate the risks posed by the overflowing reservoir.
“We are living in fear as the water levels in the reservoir continue to rise. The county government must take immediate steps to close off the area and prevent any potential disasters,” remarked Daniel Osoro, a resident, echoing the sentiments of many others.
Kung’u pointed out these concerns, highlighting the importance of residents heeding the warnings and avoiding the area surrounding the reservoir until further notice. She emphasised the need for proactive measures to safeguard the community against the looming threat.
“It is critical that residents take caution and stay away from the Rioro Water Reservoir until further notice. The safety of our citizens is paramount, and we must take all necessary precautions to prevent any untoward incidents,” Kung’u stated.
Authorities, especially the county government, have been urged to prioritise the closure and securing of the reservoir to prevent any further escalation of the situation. Long-term solutions are also being called for to address the neglected infrastructure and ensure the safety of nearby communities.
