Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company has announced its plan to ration water in the capital despite the heavy rains experienced in the country. Some estates in Nairobi County are expected to have limited water supply this week. Why will there be rationing? According to a statement from the company’s Managing Director, Nahason Muguna, the water supply will remain constant despite the dams supplying water in Nairobi overflowing due to heavy rains. He argued that the production capacity of the installed water infrastructure cannot be exceeded. i  ” Nairobi City County has four sources of water, namely Kikuyu Springs, Ruiru, Sasumua, and Thika dams. The water is treated in Ngethu, Sasumua, Kabete Water Treatment Works and Kikuyu springs,” the statement read in part. “The four have an installed daily production totaling 525.6 million liters per day against a daily demand of 900 million litres.” Muguna stated that water rationing will be enforced through the Equitable Water Distribution Program, ensuring each customer receives water once weekly. He further mentioned that heavy rainfall and flooding have caused damage to supply pipelines, which will cause certain areas within the city to encounter low water pressure. Which areas will affected? The areas to be affected by water rationing within Nairobi include: Kenyatta University, Kahawa Barracks, Chieko in Kasarani, Kamiti road near Jacaranda, Cotton Road and Dennis Pritt Road in Kilimani, Wangapala and Iregi roads in Parklands, and Brookside Groove in Westlands.
