Heavy Rains: Power Outage Leaves Families, Businesses Counting Losses

A number of estates in Nairobi have not had electricity for extended periods of time owing to the destruction caused by the ongoing rains.

The rains and resultant floods have destroyed Kenya Power infrastructure in a number of estates, leading to blackouts.

A resident of Embakasi told Wananchi Reporting that they have not had electricity for the last few days.

“Butchery operators and fresh fish traders in Embakasi area have suffered serious losses these past few days because they have not had electricity to power their fridges,” said Fillister Adhiambo, a trader in Masimba, Kayole.

She added that some of the businesses resorted to using backup generators to power their businesses.

Meanwhile, a number of families have had to discard food that had gone bad after spending hours in the fridges.

Abel Gonza who resides in Pipeline estate, said that he was forced to share out whatever was in his fridge to avoid wasting it.

“These are difficult times, and so my wife and I just decided to share whatever food stuffs we had in the fridge with our neighbours. It’s better than just throwing it away,” said Njoroge.

The ongoing rains have caused massive destruction to property and life across the country.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has said that the rains are likely to continue in the coming days.

Some of the areas affected by the ongoing rains in and around Nairobi include South C, Kahawa Sukari, Githurai, Rongai, Mombasa Road, Thika Road area, Mathare.

The ongoing rains have rendered many families in Nairobi homeless.
