YouTuber Nicholas Kioko has opened up about how the video platform pays its users, especially from within the country.
Kioko, who says he uses YouTube as his source of livelihood, said in an interview with Radio Maisha that how YouTube pays people in Kenya is not the same as how it pays those in foreign countries, especially the United States.
He revealed that in Kenya, for every one million viewers on your video, a YouTuber is paid between 80,000 to 100,000 shillings, unlike in the United States where for the same number of viewers, a YouTuber can be paid up to ten thousand dollars.
“Creating content is expensive even though it pays, but not so much. It’s the views that I get here in Kenya; usually, I get an average of 2.5m views to 3.5m views. With those views in the USA, I would live like a king, but here, with 1m views, you only get between 80-100k, but in the USA, you’d get about Ksh. 1.3M,” Kioko said.
The father of twins said that it’s hard work for content creators in the country to thrive because, as he said, YouTube doesn’t pay well for YouTubers from here.
He agreed with the earlier sentiments of TikToker Sammy Kioko that since he ventured into content creation, he has incurred a loss of over two million shillings.
Kioko also mentioned that the decline in the value of the Euro also affects content creators in the country.
