Larry Madowo, Other Motorists Struggle in Floody Nairobi Expressway Amidst Heavy Rains

 

CNN International correspondent Larry Madowo was taken aback by the state of the Nairobi Expressway following heavy rains. The water was so deep that the road beneath was invisible. “I forgot to bring a boat for the Nairobi Expressway,” Madowo quipped in his caption. His remark, perhaps a tongue-in-cheek reference to Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s October 2023 proposal to purchase boats and rafts in anticipation of the El Niño rains. In the footage, Madowo says, “We’ve been stuck in traffic on the Expressway for about an hour. He showed a man wading through the water with his trousers rolled up and remarked, "That’s how deep it is; it’s almost up to the knees." “This is serious; the tyres are covered, it’s not shallow. I think a smaller car could easily get swept away here," the journalist added.
