Joseph 'Jowie' Irungu Holds Back Tears After Being Handed Death Sentence
Jowie stood pensively as Lady Justice Grace Nzioka read out the sentence at the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday, March 13. Following the sentencing, the cameras in court panned to Jowie, whose eyes were visibly watery. The convicted murderer looked from side to side before whispering a word to the court orderly who was standing next to him. After a brief moment, Jowie shook his head before stooping low in court as Justice Nzioka continued to address the court. Jowie then returned to his usual upright posture but kept scanning the courtroom from side to side. Nzioka said Jowie was ineligible for rehabilitation as it wouldn't serve the purpose, adding that the crime committed by Jowie was beyond restitution, and he had not pleaded guilty to the offence. "Must first acknowledge the commission of the offence and the need to reform, otherwise it would not work. He did not appreciate it, and it will be an order in vain," Justice Nzioka said. Nzioka sentenced Jowie to death as provided in the offence of murder per sector 204 of the penal code "I have ordered that the first accused person before this court (being Joseph Kuria Irungu alias Jowie) shall suffer death as provided for the offence of murder pf sector 204 of take penal code of Kenya. And that the sentence is lawfully set side by a court of competent jurisdiction," she said.
