President William Ruto has donated Sh2 million to help in the send-off of the 11 Kenyatta University students who died in a Monday accident.

Ruto’s donation was given to KU Vice Chancellor Prof Paul Wainaina on Sunday by First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto when she attended the memorial service of the 11 who died.

“I would like to present a contribution and donation of Sh2 million from our President William Ruto to support the families and the entire work as we prepare to send off our children,” she said.

Mama Rachel said as an alumnus of KU, she was saddened to find out that 11 students had died in the accident.

“They were not just students, they were also family members in their respective homes. They were bright students, full of potential and eager to learn, graduate and go out to conquer the world,” she said.

“We stand with the families in solidarity, offering our love, prayer and support during this difficult time.”

For the 47 students who are still recuperating in the hospital, Mama Rachel said they are in her prayers, wishing them a quick recovery.

She also lauded the KU fraternity for the unwavering support the institution gave the students after the Monday night accident.

“Let us honour their memory by creating a more compassionate world,” she said.

She urged all motorists to exercise caution at all times on the roads.

“Be more vigilant and courteous on the roads,” she said.

This comes after KU on Saturday appealed for financial support to aid in the send-off plans.

The 11 students were among a group of 58 who were heading to Mombasa for an academic trip when one of their school buses collided with a trailer at Maungu in Voi.

The university said it is raising funds to offset medical bills and fund funeral services among other expenses.

“Kenyatta University humbly reaches out to you for financial support following the tragic road accident at Maungu, Voi that claimed 11 students and left many casualties,” the university said in a statement on Saturday.

“The tragedy has left our KU community shaken. We earnestly seek your support for all those impacted to help defray medical, funeral and other expenses.”

Well-wishers have been requested to send their contributions through the university’s bank account.
