The advertisement came moments after Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Susan Nakhumicha announced plans to recruit new doctors amidst the ongoing strike by medics. Nakhumicha noted that all public hospitals would carry on with services without any interruptions, the strike notwithstanding. How many unemployed doctors are in Kenya? The CS claimed that close to 3,000 doctors are unemployed in the country. She revealed that Kenyatta Hospital leveraged 400 applications from locum doctors for recruitment, and services were ongoing. She reprimanded the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) for going against the court order requiring them to suspend the strike. Why doctors in Kenya are striking Talks between the union and the government hit a snag after the Ministry failed to fully implement the 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Nakhumicha dismissed the CBA signed between the Ministry of Health and KMPDU regarding the remuneration of interns. The CS said medical interns do not deserve the hefty pay contained in the 2017 CBA because they are on a learning mission. She argued that there are interns who are willing to work even without pay so that they can get a licence to practise.
