A day after suspending all classes in honor of the 11 students who died in a tragic accident, the school and students will pay tribute in a special way until Friday, March 22. A candle-lighting ceremony was led by the Institution’s student leaders.
“Gathering in remembrance: Kenyatta University stands together in solemn solidarity, honoring the lives lost in a tragic accident,” the KU community captioned the night event. Students were informed classes would be suspended in a memo issued on March 19th.
The office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor has additionally, in a memo dated March 20th, notified all students that it was recommending the suspension of classes to allow students to mourn their departed comrades. A notice from the school has informed students that it will be a three-day event.
“Good afternoon all, at exactly 1:00 PM, the campanile bell will ring for one minute for the next three days starting today,” read part of the notice. According to the school, this is a historic moment as the bell has never been used before. The bell is part of Italian Architecture.
The KU website describes the tower as a unique bell tower that houses a museum and archival materials of the University’s history, heritage, and culture, making it a resource center for researchers. Each of its 14 floors houses rare and unique objects and informational materials about the University that are open to the public.
