Jowie Irungu’s Family to Appeal against Death Sentence: “The Judge Built Mountain out of Clothes”

Joseph Irungu alias Jowie’s family has faulted the ruling where their son was sentenced to death over the murder of Monica Kimani six years ago. Jowie Irungu’s family vowed to appeal the judgement.  Speaking outside the courtroom on Wednesday, March 13, Irungu’s mother faulted the ruling, insisting that her son was innocent and was erroneously sentenced.The family vowed to move to the Court of Appeal to contest the ruling by High Court Judge Grace Nzioka.Why Jowie Irungu’s family rejected the ruling The mother exuded confidence that justice would eventually be served, and her son insisted that Jowie was innocent of Monica’s murder. “I believe my son is innocent. He has not done any wrong and has not killed anyone. I believe there is a God of a second chance,” the mother said Jowie’s legal team accused the judge of making a ruling to please members of the public. “We affirm in our belief that during all this process, the hon judge was playing to the gallery. We are adamant in our belief that the judgement delivered in the court is completely and substantially different from the written judgement,” the lawyer claimed. The lawyers accused the judge of using wrong circumstantial evidence to convict their client, whom they insist is innocent. “The judge built a mountain out of the clothes that Jowie wore, especially those round kaki shorts; those are the only things she had that could link Jowie to do death of Monica Kimani because there were drops of blood. But the shorts brought in court were different from what Jowie wore,” they added.
