Police To Impound Vehicles With Unauthorized Sirens, Strobe Lights

Police are set to initiate a renewed crackdown on vehicles fitted with unauthorized strobe lights and sirens following safety concerns raised by road users.

Head of Public Services Felix Koskei authorized the crackdown in a letter dated February 15, 2024, and forwarded it to Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome.

“It has come to the attention of this office, that there are numerous government and privately owned vehicles that have been installed with strobe lights, sirens, and related equipment, without lawful authorization and in full breach of the law,” he said.

Citing the Traffic Act, Koskei stated that breaching its provisions not only raises safety concerns for road users but also presents a security threat.

According to Section 119 of the Act, the use of a siren is strictly prohibited, except for authorized vehicles such as police cars, ambulances, and fire engines. Therefore, employing a siren in an unauthorized vehicle constitutes an offense.

“The process of obtaining approvals for the installation and use of strobe lights, sirens, and associated equipment for vehicles not authorized by the Act is outlined, and individuals wishing to use such equipment may request authorization per the procedure provided,” he said.

Koskei also notified all Principal Secretaries, Accounting Officers, the Clerk of the National Assembly, the Clerk of the Senate, the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Council of Governors emphasizing the need for strict compliance and enforcement.

Others notified include Chief Executive Officers of State Corporations, and Independent Offices and Commissions.
