Okiya Omtatah: Questions Arise Over Senator's KSh 600k Car after Accident with Trailer

Busia senator Okiya Omtatah escaped uninjured after a road accident on Friday, February 16. A fuel tanker hit Senator Okiya Omtatah's car.  The politician and litigious activist was headed to Busia when a fuel tanker hit his vehicle in the Ojola area of Kisumu county. Which car does Okiya Omtatah drive? The senator said the truck lost control and rammed into his car before landing in a ditch. His driver's effort to escape the oncoming vehicle failed. "The trailer landed in a ditch. It was going to be a bad accident, but I was lucky," he said. Images of the accident surfaced on social media and showed the impact on the front of his car. The fuel tanker blocked the road with one section in the ditch. However, Omtatah's vehicle was the centre of attention. The senator was using a Nissan Wingroad at the time of the accident. The car is one of the cheapest in the Kenyan market and goes for as low as KSh 600,00. Some Kenyans lauded Omtatah for his simplicity and for not acquiring a fuel guzzler like his colleagues. However, others questioned the Wingroad's safety ratings. Here are some of the reactions: simbaa_blacks: “The simplicity from this man, honourable.” _mokoo: “How can a senator drive such an unsafe car?” karis_wangeci: “That is one senator that needs to be protected by all state resources.” elsieoburu: “God is protecting Senator. You are complaining about his car as if you're not the same ones complaining about your tax money being misused.” methuselah_moshi: “We need to vote this guy in.” its_her_carol: “Why are guys laughing at his car? If he starts stealing, you will also complain. What's wrong with us?” Why didn’t Okiya Omtatah upgrade lifestyle? Omtatah, while speaking to Spice FM, previously disclosed that he maintained his lifestyle despite all the privileges of being a senator. Omtatah revealed that he had not procured an expensive car, even with the privilege of a car grant as a senator. "I drive a Demio. A car is a system of levers to get you from point A to B, which a bicycle or anything else can do. A small car is good in the pocket," said Omtatah.
