KRA Tax Amnesty: Taxman Makes KSh 14.5b after Forgiving Over 200b Penalties
Kenyans whose tax penalties were waived have paid over KSh 14.5 billion to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) introduced a 10-month tax amnesty programme in September 2023, which has so far waived over KSh 200 billion in penalties. How much tax did KRA collect from amnesty programme? According to the KRA Commissioner of Domestic Tax Rispah Simiyu, the authority collected over KSh 14.5 billion from 227,071 taxpayers utilising the programme in the last six months. Simiyu urged Kenyans to use the remaining four months and take advantage of the programme. “KRA reminds taxpayers with outstanding principal taxes to take advantage of the amnesty programme. Further, taxpayers who have not filed their returns for the amnesty period are urged to file the returns in order to benefit from the Tax Amnesty Programme,” said Simuyu, as quoted by People Daily. Who should apply for KRA tax amnesty? The commissioner reiterated that all taxpayers with penalties and interest but have no principal taxes owing for periods up to December 31, 2022, should apply for the programme. A taxpayer with principal tax accrued up to December 31, 2022, but pays the outstanding principal tax debt by June 30, 2024, will also be eligible for the waiver. KRA maintained that the amnesty will also apply to late filing of returns penalties.
