Kirinyaga: 2 Dead as Sewer Under Construction at County Offices Collapses, Buries Them Alive
Two construction workers have been buried alive while digging a sewage trench at the Kirinyaga County offices. The workers were reportedly engrossed in digging the trench in Kutus Town when the walls collapsed on them. Anxious workers waited beside the scene after the collapse as rescue operation continued for the better part of Friday, February 23, in the afternoon. A shaken worker revealed they could retrieve one worker from the rubble, while two failed to make it alive. "We were engaged in digging the trench when the tragedy struck, we lost two of our colleagues, but a third was rescued and taken to the hospital," said one of the construction workers. What were Kirinyaga workers doing on sewer line Kirinyaga County Executive Committee member for Public Works, Jared Migwi, confirmed the incident, revealing that it happened at around 2pm. Migwi said a rescue operation was initiated immediately, leading to the rescue two of the workers were rescued from the scene. He expressed his regrets that two lives were lost, adding that their bodies had been moved to the Kerugoya Level Five Hospital morgue. The two were part of a crew working for a national government contractor on the Kerugoya-Kutus sewerage line. When the incident occurred, they were digging a trench to connect a sewerage pipe from the district headquarters to the main sewerage line in the Ndomba area.
