Kelvin Kiptum: Woman Who Was in Company of Celebrated Marathoner Discharged from Hospital

 

As the country grapples with the loss of an iconic sports gem, the family of the woman in the company of Kelvin Kiptum has a reason to smile after their relative is discharged from the hospital. Accident scene where Kelvin Kiptum tragically lost his life.  Sharon Kosgei was admitted to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret after she cheated death in a tragic accident.Confirming her state, the hospital's Chief Executive Officer, Phillip Kirwa, stated that Kosgei's status had improved, marking her discharge from the health facility after treatment on Monday, February 12. How did the ill-fated car kill Kelvin Kiptum? According to the police report, the Chicago marathon world record holder was in the company of a woman, Sharon Chephurui Kosgei, 24, and his coach, Gervais Hazikimana, 37. Upon reaching the location of the accident, he lost control and veered off-road, entering a ditch on his left side. He drove in the ditch for about 60 metres before hitting a big tree. Kiptum and his trainer died instantly, while Kosgei escaped with serious injuries and was rushed to MTRH for medical attention. "Occurred at Kaptagat Forest area along the Eldoret-Ravine road. It happened that one Kelvin Kiptum, the Chicago Marathon World Record Holder, was driving his m/vehicle reg. number KDL 566F Toyota Premio carrying two passengers, namely Gervais Hakizimana Rwanda, male adult aged 37yrs-his coach—and Sharon Chepkurui Kosgei Keiyo, a female adult aged 24 years from Eldoret heading towards Ravine," the police report reads.  Upon reaching the location of the accident, he lost control and veered off-road entering a ditch on his left side. He drove in the ditch for about 60 metres before hitting a big tree. As a result, Kelvin Kiptum and Gervais Hakizimana died on the spot whereas Sharon Chepkurui Kosgei escaped with serious injuries and was rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment," the police report added.
