The construction of malls in Kenya has been increasing in recent years, with modern shopping centres recording a boom. The Cedar Mall in Nanyuki is one of the largest in the Mt Kenya region. Cedar Mall in Nanyuki, Laikipia county, serves three counties and features retail giants, boutiques, modern entertainment, fashion stores and restaurants. According to its website, the mall, designed by Bowman Associates, boasts over 130,000 square feet of retail space. Who owns Cedar Mall? The facility is owned by the British investment group Kiloran Development. Kenyan Wall Street reported that it cost KSh 1.3 billion to construct, with Housing Finance contributing KSh 820 million, while the British group channelled KSh 480 million. Its tenants include KFC, ICEA Lion Group, NCBA Bank, Optica, Chandarana Food Plus Supermarket, a food court, Java House, 300 parking spaces and fashionable line shops. “We understand the importance of value for money, convenience and safety and this is incorporated in every aspect of how the mall operates. Elsewhere, one of the businessmen credited with building Nakuru City is CK Patel, the proprietor of Westside Mall. The mall’s construction started in 2009 and was completed in 2011. The 15000 square feet mall hosts over 40 retail shops and Naivas Supermarket and can accommodate over 500 cars. It houses Equity Bank, Prime Bank and the Aga Khan University Hospital.
