A police constable has been arrested following a spate of robbery with violence incidents in the area. Entrance to Kisii Central Police Station. A Directorate of Criminal Investigations(DCI) report indicated that angry residents cornered the General Service Unit(GSU) officer. “A rogue police officer is in custody after he was cornered by members of the public in a violent robbery on February 3, 2024. Police Constable Edgar Opollo was saved from a furious mob by Kisii Central police, who were on patrol, after finding the armed suspect under a hail of hefty blows. On enquiry, the officers established that the suspect had robbed a smartphone from a Kisii University student, and on frisking the injured suspect found the phone. He was arrested and escorted to the station,” read the report in part. How was Apollo identified as a robber Following his arrest, the police officers who had been pursuing an armed gang that robbed KSh 40,000 from PEPS Mini Supermarket conducted an identification parade. During Patrol During the robbery captured by CCTV, one of the robbers, who had their face covered, carried a rifle and the other with a pistol. The robber carrying a pistol stood out, but there was no concrete evidence that it was an officer until the supermarket owner positively identified Apollo. “Following Opollo’s arrest, an identification parade was conducted where the supermarket owner successfully identified him as one of the robbers who accosted him,” continued the DCI. Apollo was taken to a Kisii hospital as police finalised investigations ahead of his interrogation and arraignment for robbery with violence.
