Kirinyaga: Angry Locals Burn Down Drinking Joint Where 6 Revellers Died after Consuming Illicit Brew

Residents of Kangai village woke up to raze down a drinking joint in which six people died and five others lost their sight. A police officer walking past the debris of a joint razed down by angry locals of Kangai, Kirinyaga county.  The deaths were confirmed by Kirinyaga County Chief Officer for Health, George Karoki, who said the drink the victims imbibed might have contained ethanol. “They had taken some illicit brew and we are suspecting it must have had ethanol because the type of signs and symptoms that have been exhibited from the patients have shown that they were blurred vision,” said Karoki. Why Mwea DCC is helpless in fight against illicit brew Mwea Deputy County Commissioner Teresia Wanjiku decried sabotage in the fight against illicit brew in the sub-county and the adjoining areas.  She accused the Wanguru Law Courts, which she claimed had been slacking on expediting the cases presented before it of brewers apprehended for making the harmful alcohol. “We have prosecuted more than 10 cases and we have not been successful in most of them, especially on ethanol which we confiscated in this homestead and we were told to produce the apparatus from the manufacturers. I don’t know which ones are expected in that case because ethanol you just mix it with water and that’s all,” she lamented.
